TOP INTERNATIONAL FASTPITCH TOURNAMENT TO DRAW WORLD’S BEST FEMALE ATHLETES TO CANADA

Canada to host one of top three women’s fastpitch events in the world for 2011 Surrey, B.C. - Surrey, British Columbia has been selected as the site of one of the top three fastpitch tournaments in the world, and will host the 2011 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, July 9 to 17, at Softball City and
Cloverdale Athletic Park.

The tournament will showcase the world’s top fastpitch players, and with 80 to 100 teams competing and over 1,300 participating athletes will be the one of the largest women’s only sporting events hosted in BC in 2011 and the largest fastpitch tournament hosted in Canada.

“This community has a great legacy of promoting and supporting women’s fastpitch events, and to be the home of one of the three largest tournaments in the world, drawing the top teams and athletes to this event, is extremely exciting,” says Greg Timm, Chairman. “This is a huge event for a Canadian city to host and we know this will elevate the level of the sport even higher for our young athletes,” says Timm.
The tournament will feature an International Invitational Tournament where five of the top six women’s teams in the world will play.

Confirmed teams:

  • Team USA (2010 ISF Women’s World Champion)
  • Team Japan (Silver medalist, 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship)
  • Team Canada (Bronze medalist, 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship)
  • Team Venezuela (5th place finish, 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship)
  • Team Australia (6th place finish, 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship)

The Scotiabank Canadian Open will also include a Club Team Division with premier university level teams competing; a Future’s Division (under 19) with both a Gold and Select level. The Scotiabank Gold International Championship will feature teams from Peru, Great Britain, Brazil, Colombia, and Canada.

The Showcase Division (under 16), both Gold and Select levels, will feature teams from across North America.
The event is also proud to include a Celebration of Softball area at Softball City, which will feature sports activities and clinics for young and future players. Free with admission to the event, the Celebration of Softball area is designed to promote participation in sport and the importance of physical activity in youth.
